Description

Ngawang Namgyal. In this Bhutanese painting, the central figure is Shabdung Nagawang Namgyal. In the mid-sixteenth century, Gelugpa dominance in Tibet forced the Drugpa Sect of the Karmapa to find a new home in Bhutan. Ngawang Namgyal, a Drugpa monk from Ralung monastery, introduced Buddhism to Bhutan and became the first Shabdung and Dharma Raja of that country. He is seated on a lion throne and surrounded by important figures in the Drugpa lineage.
