89-17-20
Length: 102 cm; Max. Width: 47 cm

  This painting is of lauki iwo which represents a lake or large pond. The design resembles a large backwards S with an extra arm on the lower curve of the S. It is white outlined by a black with white dot trim on a red background.
  The condition of the painting is poor. It is discolored and has a large hole near the center. It is cracked at the bottom and is warped due to reduced humidity.


89-17-21
Length: 97 cm; Max. Width: 51 cm

  This painting is of topai iwo which is a stream with rocks or boulders. The design is abstract, involving white curves and lines outlined in solid black on a red background. It looks like water flowing around rocks.
  The condition of the painting is poor. It is weak and cracked severely at the top. There are two holes used for hanging the painting: one at the bottom center and one towards the top center. It is warped due to reduced humidity.


89-17-22
Length: 105.5 cm; Max. Width: 34 cm

   This painting is called ulawi because it is the sacred ulawi design. It is an abstract design which has two arrow shapes pointing away from each other in the center of the painting. It was probably originally white outlined in black with white dot trim on a red background.
  The condition of the painting is poor. It has been damaged by fire. It is weak and cracked. The colors and design are difficult to discern. There is a large hole in the center, apparently used for hanging the painting. It is warped due to reduced humidity.


89-17-23
Length: 99 cm; Max. Width: 32 cm

  This painting is of popuwa which represents a spirit in human shape. The stick person has a red mark on its belly and is wearing what looks like a red skirt. The figure is white and is outlined in black. The head is at the base and the feet are towards the top of the sago spathe.
  The condition of the painting is poor. There are two holes made for hanging the painting: one at the bottom and one at the belly of the stick person. There is an open crack in-between the figure's eyes. It is warped due to reduced humidity and the whole painting is in shabby condiition.


89-17-24
Length: 100 cm; Max. Width: 32 cm

  This painting is of waito sowa which represents the taro leaf. The abstract design is white outlined by a solid black line on a red background. The paint has been worn off the grooves of the sago spathe, leaving lines running down the painting.
  The condition of the painting is fair. It is sturdy, but warped due to reduced humidity. There is one hole just below the center. There are some minor cracks.


89-17-25
Length: 109 cm; Max. Width: 29 cm

  This painting, ulawi toniyoi, is a version of the sacred ulawi design. It is a white abstract design running lengthwise with the center part of it resembling an arrow. It is bordered by a black with white dot trim.
  It is in fair conditon. It is warped due to reduced humidity and there are cracks at the base and above the center. There is one hole on the left side which looks as if it had been punched in to hang the painting.


89-17-26
Length: 113 cm; Max. Width: 33 cm

  This painting is of tomoki and poso which is a stone and water container. This design is dark white on a darker background. The lighter color is in a backbone design. Just below the center, there is an alteration to the backbone design. There is an opening in the center in the shape of a C. It is possible that it is the container. There is a black border around the white backbone design.
  The condition of the painting is fair. It is quite sturdy, but is slightly warped due to reduced humidity, and there is some cracking at the base. There is a hole near the center, apparently for hanging the painting. The colors are extremely dark, possibly due to the elements.


89-17-27
Length: 108 cm; Max. Width: 42 cm

   This painting is of malu which represents a pig's tusks. The abstract design starts with curlicues at the top and moves down to a spiral towards the bottom. The design is white outlined in black with white dots and is on a red background.
   The condition of the painting is fair. It is sturdy. It is warped due to reduced humidity. There is a small hole on the right side in the middle which appears to have been used for hanging the painting.

Length: 103 cm; Max. Width: 31 cm

  This is a poor version of the sacred ulawi design. The top half of ulawi nanomo looks like the typical ulawi design, but the bottom half has a huge blob in it, like a snake swallowing an animal. The design below the blob also looks distorted. The design is white and is outlined by a solid black line and is on a red background.
  The condition of the painting is fair. It is warped due to reduced humidity, and cracked as well. There is a hole at the bottom in the center and there are several small holes at the top center. The holes appear to have been used for hanging.


89-17-29
Length: 115 cm; Max. Width: 40 cm

  This painting is a version of the sacred ulawi design. The native term for this is ulawi toniyoi. It has two arrows pointing away from each other in the center. The whole design is outlined in black with white dot trim.
  This painting is in poor condition. It is darkened, possibly from fire damage. There are several cracks. It has three holes, one of which looks like it has been placed for the purpose of hanging the painting. It is weak and it is warped due to reduced humidity.


89-17-30
Length: 110 cm; Max. Width: 33 cm

  This painting is of waito sowa which represents the taro leaf. The painting has a washed look to it. The abstract design is white outlined in black on a red background. At the center, the red intrudes into the design in a C shape.
  The condition is fair. It is warped due to reduced humidity. There is one hole in the center used for hanging the painting. There is a square piece missing from the bottom left corner.


89-17-31
Length: 112 cm; Max. Width: 36 cm

  This painting is of iwoni popuwa which represents the spirit dwelling in water. There is a black figure (a primitive dog-shape) with white dots in the middle of the large white diamond which is in the center of the painting. The white design is outlined in black with white dots and the background is red.
  The condition is poor. The colors have been darkened by age. It is warped due to reduced humidity. There are three large holes near the center which appear to have been made and used for hanging the painting. The edges are frayed and have been chipped off along the bottom right-hand side.


89-17-32
Length: 96 cm; Max. Width: 44 cm

  This painting is of nopou which is a tortoise. The tortoise is black and has a band of white dots by its fore limbs and hind limbs. Its head is towards the base. It is laying on a white design which begins to curlicue at the top and bottom. The white design is laying on a red background.
  The condition of the painting is poor. It is weak and has been warped due to reduced humidity. There are several holes which look as if they were caused by insects. There are two man-made holes along the edges near the center which appear to have been used for hanging the painting. There are several cracks possibly caused by the warping. There is a hole at the center and a split at the top.


89-17-33
Length: 84 cm; Max. Width: 33.5 cm

  This painting is of fu namoli mi which represents a pig backbone. The design is white outlined in black with white dots and runs the length of the red background. There is a small fat band crossing the middle and there are two sets of curlicues or tusks above and below the band.
  The condition of the painting is poor. It is warped due to reduced humidity. It is weak and cracked throughout. There is one hole just off center.


89-17-34
Length: 107 cm; Max. Width: 33 cm

  This painting is miaminani-fakomo which is the Mianmin shield design as interpreted by the Sawiyano. The distinctive feature of this painting is the elliptical leaf shape that appears in pairs down the length of the painting. They are white with a black with white dot trim. The black protrudes into the white in short lines all around the shape. The background is red.
  The condition of the painting is good. It is warped due to reduced humidity. There are three holes, probably used for hanging the painting. There is some cracking and parts of the edges are broken.


89-17-35
Length: 103.5 cm; Max. Width: 35 cm

  This painting is of ulawi toniyoi representing the sacred ulawi design. It is a white design outlined in black. The center shape looks like two arrows pointing away from each other and at the center of each arrow head there is a red hole. The background is red.
  The condition of the painting is good. The colors are bright and it is sturdy. There are three holes, two at the top and one along the left edge. The two holes at the top look as if they've been used to hang the painting. There is some cracking along the edges. It is warped due to reduced humidity.


89-17-36
Length: 76 cm; Max. Width: 31 cm

  This painting is of folukwanoni namoli ku which represents the back of the spirit woman. It has been broken on top in order to fit the roof of the young boys' ritual house. The design is white and is outlined with a black and white dot trim and is on top of a red background. The top of the painting has two red circles in the center of the white design.
  The condition of the painting is good. It is slightly warped and is sturdy with no major cracks. The top has been broken off on purpose, and is not due to damage. Two holes along the center edges may have been man-made for hanging the painting, but there is a lot of insect damage so it is difficult to tell.


89-17-37
Length: 116 cm; Max. Width: 39 cm

  This painting is of amu uliyaku representing the new moon. The design is hard to make out due to discoloration of the painting. The abstract pattern is similar to fish-hooks in that they curve out like hooks. The design is a lighter color oulined by black with lighter toned dots, and is on a red-brown background.
  The condition of the painting is poor. It is discolored and is cracked along the center. There are at least five holes which look as if they were used to hang the painting. There is a v-shaped-section missing on the right side near the top. It is warped due to reduced humidity.
